However, according to the company&#8217;s own tests, these new models don&#8217;t perform as well as older models from competitors like OpenAI.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #1bab6e;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #1bab6e;\" href=\"https:\/\/machinelearning.apple.com\/research\/apple-foundation-models-2025-updates\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">In a blog post<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Monday, Apple shared that human testers found the text produced by its latest \u201cApple On-Device\u201d model, designed to work offline on devices such as the iPhone,\u00a0 \u00a0to be \u201ccomparably\u201d good, but not superior to the text generated by similar models from Google and Alibaba. Additionally, testers rated Apple\u2019s more advanced model, known as \u201cApple Server,\u201d lower than OpenAI\u2019s year-old <\/span><span style=\"color: #1bab6e;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #1bab6e;\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/05\/13\/openais-newest-model-is-gpt-4o\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">GPT-4o<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In another assessment focused on image analysis, human raters preferred Meta\u2019s Llama 4 Scout model over Apple Server, which is unexpected. In various tests, Llama 4 Scout has performed worse than leading models from AI companies like Google, Anthropic, and OpenAI.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These benchmark findings support reports that suggest Apple\u2019s AI research team is having difficulty keeping pace with rivals in the competitive AI landscape. Recently, Apple\u2019s AI offerings have not impressed many, and a much-anticipated upgrade for Siri has been postponed indefinitely. Some customers have even <\/span><span style=\"color: #1bab6e;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #1bab6e;\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/03\/20\/apple-faces-lawsuit-over-apple-intelligence-delays\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">filed lawsuits against Apple<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, claiming the company has promoted AI features that are not yet available.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Apple On-Device model, which has around 3 billion parameters, is responsible for tasks like summarization and text analysis. (Parameters are indicators of a model\u2019s problem-solving ability; generally, more parameters lead to better performance.) As of Monday, third-party developers can access this model through Apple\u2019s Foundation Models framework.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apple claims that both the Apple On-Device and Apple Server models offer improved efficiency and tool usage compared to earlier versions and can understand about 15 different languages.
