    {"id":927,"date":"2025-04-24T12:31:44","date_gmt":"2025-04-24T12:31:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.wisemark3t.com\/blogs\/?p=927"},"modified":"2025-10-08T12:32:36","modified_gmt":"2025-10-08T12:32:36","slug":"us-lawmakers-urge-uk-spy-court-to-hold-apple-backdoor-secret-hearing-in-public","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wisemarket.com.pk\/blogs\/us-lawmakers-urge-uk-spy-court-to-hold-apple-backdoor-secret-hearing-in-public\/","title":{"rendered":"Us Lawmakers Urge Uk Spy Court To Hold Apple \u2018backdoor\u2019 Secret Hearing In Public"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A bipartisan delegation of American legislators is calling on the head of the U.K. surveillance court to conduct a public hearing regarding Apple&#8217;s expected challenge to an alleged secret U.K. government legal request.<\/p>\n<p>Five federal lawmakers, including U.S. Senator Ron Wyden, have expressed their thought that it is in the public interest for any hearings regarding the alleged order to not be conducted in secrecy. <strong><span style=\"color: #1bab6e;\"><a style=\"color: #1bab6e;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wyden.senate.gov\/news\/press-releases\/bipartisan-members-of-congress-to-uk-spy-court-uk-gag-orders-for-surveillance-backdoors-threaten-americans-security-and-privacy-impede-congressional-oversight\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">In a letter this week<\/a><\/span><\/strong> to the president of the U.K.\u2019s Investigatory Powers Tribunal (IPT), they emphasized the importance of transparency on this matter.<\/p>\n<p>According to the lawmakers&#8217; letter, the alleged U.K. order restricts California-based Apple from participating in \u201cconstitutionally protected\u201d speech under American law and hinders their ability to perform congressional oversight.<\/p>\n<p>According to reports from <strong><span style=\"color: #1bab6e;\"><a style=\"color: #1bab6e;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2025\/02\/07\/apple-encryption-backdoor-uk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Washington Post<\/a><\/span><\/strong> in February, the U.K. government had requested that Apple create a &#8220;<strong><span style=\"color: #1bab6e;\"><a style=\"color: #1bab6e;\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/04\/25\/techcrunch-reference-guide-to-security-terminology\/#backdoor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">backdoor<\/a><\/span><\/strong>&#8221; in their system, granting access to cloud-stored data of all customers globally. Despite being prohibited by law from discussing the details of this request, Apple apparently declined and instead <strong><span style=\"color: #1bab6e;\"><a style=\"color: #1bab6e;\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/02\/21\/apple-pulls-icloud-end-to-end-encryption-feature-for-uk-users-after-government-demanded-backdoor\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pulled its Advanced Data Protection iCloud encryption feature<\/a><\/span><\/strong> for U.K. users, rather than complying with the order.<\/p>\n<p>According to Senator Wyden&#8217;s letter, an upcoming private petition will be heard by the <strong><span style=\"color: #1bab6e;\"><a style=\"color: #1bab6e;\" href=\"https:\/\/investigatorypowerstribunal.org.uk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">United Kingdom&#8217;s Investigatory Powers Tribunal<\/a><\/span><\/strong> on Friday 14th March, 2025. This tribunal, which deals with legal cases involving the use of surveillance powers in the U.K., has listed the hearing on <strong><span style=\"color: #1bab6e;\"><a style=\"color: #1bab6e;\" href=\"https:\/\/investigatorypowerstribunal.org.uk\/hearings\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tribunal\u2019s public schedule<\/a><\/span><\/strong> and it relates to Apple, as reported.<\/p>\n<p>Apple did not respond, when TechCrunch approached them on Friday, 14th March.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the U.K. government has stated that they will not be providing any comments regarding operational matters at this time. This includes their decision to neither confirm nor deny the existence of any related notices.<\/p>\n<p>The number of companies that have received a technical demand from the U.K. government is uncertain.<\/p>\n<p>As per the legislators&#8217; letter, Google also informed Senator Wyden&#8217;s office that \u201calso recently told Senator Wyden\u2019s office that, if it had received a technical capabilities notice, it would be prohibited from disclosing that fact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both Liberty and Privacy International, two civil rights groups, are <strong><span style=\"color: #1bab6e;\"><a style=\"color: #1bab6e;\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/03\/14\/uks-secret-icloud-backdoor-order-triggers-civil-rights-challenge\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">challenging the U.K. government&#8217;s backdoor order<\/a><\/span><\/strong> through a legal submission to the IPT.
